I finally put the kayak in down the road at the Perry Lake Wildlife Area. I have been wanting to check this area out for ages and finally made the time. The water is waayyy too low but it was still awesome. I slid into the super shallow water next to a super cute bullfrog who was watching me. I floated out into the awesome water lilies. Of course I failed to bring the camera so I relied upon my cell phone.
The shallow water made moving hard but it was awesome to see all the wildlife. Snakes, turtles, egrets, turkey vultures, kill deer and I think a king fisher! Pretty awesome! I was poling instead of paddling pretty often! There were hundreds of egrets all in one place!
I was a bit freaked out by the snakes when I poled past the old section of road. I’m guessing water moccasin. Creepy but distant – kinda. I kept going and finally found some open water. It was fish alley and this is where the screaming began! There were SOOOO many fish jumping and taking off through the water. I was surrounded by fish ripples and little shiners were jumping over my kayak and several brushed against me on the way past THEN a sunfish landed in my lap! I was intermittently startled and thus screaming intermittently when I ended up laughing so hard. It was hilarious that I was repeatedly screaming because of fish when I actually was kayaking in the wilderness on purpose! Too funny! Sadly this made me really need to go pee but I was unnaturally (for me) too scared to get in the water! Shallow, super disgusting smushy mud and snakes! Ack! I bet it was an amazing site to see me hanging my tail over the side of the kayak while hanging onto a tree stump for balance! Fun times! It was an excellent trip but next time I will work on my stealth behavior! Screaming scared the birds more than the paddling. I might also find some muck boots or something. Also, I will bring my real camera for wilderness observation! It’s always an adventure!
