#88 Thankfulness is small town living! Opportunities galore!

Wow!  It was a small town weekend for us.  I continue to enjoy more quality time with family and friends and this weekend was no exception to the new rule!  Friday evening we were joined by some WONDERFUL friends who we do not see often enough for the Friday Fish Fry at the local Catholic Church.  It was pretty awesome!  The have a school bus converted into a frying factory.  It is parked next to the old Catholic school where hundreds of locals eat shrimp, cod and catfish every Friday during Lent.  When I say hundreds, I’m not kidding, I didn’t see the final number the night we ate dinner but there was a Friday Night with 770!!  Wow!   Oh, did I mention that it was all you could eat including the fish, the side dishes (green beans, mashed tatos, a salad and dessert.  Crazy quantities for $$8  Enjoyable company in a unique dining environment!! The cool thing is that you see people you know and haven’t seen for ages or you meet and chat with people you have never met.  Everyone is friendly and relaxed in this casual setting.  Possibly an experience unique to small towns?  I imagine that Catholic parishes in large cities have something similar but do they draw essentially everyone in a 20 mile radius?  I don’t know, I think it’s unique to small town America.

Saturday we went to Patriots Day in McLouth.  Marek and I arrived in time to chat then watch the Parade.  Marcus kicked off the parade with the Star Spangled Banner (He knows all the words!  He was profusely thanked!)

He then jumped in the patrol car to lead the parade!  Small town joy!  It is an excellent event for a small town.  There were representatives from each branch of the military, cute little kids, old cars, loads of fire trucks, horses and a marching band!  I thought these little boys were so cute during the Star Spangled Banner!  They were actually singing along.  They are the official # 88!  Northeast Kansas = heart of the midwest!

The sincere patriotism, care and concern is felt during this event.  I saw adults moved to tears by the Star Spangled Banner and again by the prayer for military, law enforcement and fire fighters.  Children ran in the street playing and eating snow cones.  People from across the county came together to honor the sacrifices of military personnel and their families.  Nice!

The Horses are a big hit with 6th graders right now.  This group is made up of a few adults and the youth group of the “Cowboy Church”.  It seems like a perfect fit for the wilderness!  You can wear your boots to church and they sponsor some rodeo events.  Marek is enamored by his friends with horses!

It was enjoyable to be a part of this event.  We petted goats and ate Kiwanis BBQ beef in a pole barn!  Welcome to the wilderness baby!  I hope you have the opportunity to hang out at a small town community event sometime.  Perhaps a unique experience these days!
