Fair Week 2010

Well, I made it through a week of the 4H fair! Thank you, God!

It was a good week overall. Lots to do and see and do and do! Marek had a successful fair with lots of Purple Ribbons. His geology was purple then was selected as reserve champion in his class.

Neato! Off to state fair!

He also entered in Self Determined project, um you determine what you want to do then do it! Pretty cool project! He did our family project, Fight Against Diabetes. He gave several speeches and made a display. Marek has worked hard on the public presentation aspects of this project He received the Grand Champion award for this! Yay!

He also had a variety of arts and crafts entries and did great on them. Marek is super creative. He was pleased with his ribbons.

Even though we enjoy the animals, I'm pretty happy we don't have any. It's nice to only worry about feeding and hydrating people. Also a plus, we didn't have to be there from 7:30am-10:00pm everyday! Overall, it was a rewarding experience for all our hard work.

It is important to remember that 4H is a family activity. Not only are there specific jobs for the parents, kids learn best with some guidance. There are two potential downsides to 4H, one is the parent who does it FOR the kid and the other is the parent who does NOTHING for the kid. Either one of these can completely defeat the purpose of 4H which is to help youth learn and develop. It is a hard balance sometimes but it is an important one. Parent jobs are not only with their own kids but with all the youth in the club. Learning their names, their projects and supporting each kid as they complete projects is the fun part. Watching them cry when they sell their animal or have a disappointment is tough but it's the learning part.

Overall, it was a tiring but positive week of 100 degree plus weather. It was my first year as the Community Leader (leader of the club) and I think that it was a first successful fair. Yay!

This is Elvis and Priscilla!
