Some of my students came back from a service learning project at the Topeka Rescue Mission with a picture to show me. We serve lunch at the mission once a month and during this particular lunch they served a salad that looked so good they had to take a picture to show me! So funny! They love me and want to share virtual salad with me!
I have been reading my "In Defense of Food" book. (By Michael Pollan) I have learned quite a bit from it. One thing I've learned - I'm on the right track. I will share more from the book later but mostly the bottom line is: eat locally grown, fresh food if at all possible. This is what I do most of the time. It's much harder this time of year and I sorta suck at doing this with meat (a primary meat source for me is boneless skinless chicken breasts) but.... I can keep working in it. We just got a farm raised hog from a friend - yay! I purchase milk, chevre cheese and eggs from a local farm weekly. Today is fresh milk, egg and cheese day. Yum!

This is the guard turkey that greets me at Reid Ranch. I think he would taste delicious! He kind if makes me nervous, crowding me and guarding his flock. Anyway! I also grow a lot of fresh veggies in season and shop at local farmers markets. I don't think it's weird to eat a red pepper with my lunch, they are delicious!
I get excited about sharing my "weird" food with the students. They might not end up liking it but they have a new, broader life view for having sampled something new! I am happy to share my healthy eating habits with others. I don't like to share my less healthy habits, because I want to keep all the ice cream for myself!
