Saturday June 11th and Sunday June 12th were the State 4H Geology Field Trip. This is a pretty big deal that occurs annually. In fact, it is so large, that they have started to have two simultaneously due to the large numbers of participants. This year we were based in Valley Falls, close to home. I learned that it is better to pack it all up and go stay at base camp than it is to try to take advantage of being close to home! Really! I forgot something or planned poorly in the scope of constantly changing needs all weekend long. It was fun and interesting and I think the kids enjoyed it. I enjoyed it but was occasionally overwhelmed by the extra responsibilities that I needed to take care of this year. On the other hand, it was pretty cool and I felt useful and helpful to others – something I enjoy.
My friend Julie Justus took this photo, I love it, it shows the kids in happy place! Saturday evening there is a quiz bowl – the kids get to push buttons that buzz in order to chime in to answer. They don’t want to do it but then they do it and enjoy it. Marek’s team won first place for the 12 and under category. Nice!
Since we didn’t camp at the fairgrounds, we had to drive back home every day. Bleh! The kids were SUPER tired yet amazingly hyper on the ride back home. I hadn’t taken a picture all day so I stopped the jeep and surprised the wrestling mania in the back seat. They were hilarious. When we got home, Marek was so tired, wound up and wiped out that he puked. Bleh! However, he had a refreshing drink and a snack and zonked right out.

The Dover Quarry. 200-ish people looking for fossils as a storm rolls into the area. Happily it was just a light sprinkle of rain. We found awesome fossils. I really hope that I can arrange a return trip sometime soon.
WoW! Well, I almost missed a day. However, I snapped this picture of a kayak at Sam’s Club with the Droid to send to Julie – who is hoping to purchase a kayak soon. Turns out that this was the only photo I took that day! I was on my way to Diabetes Camp when I had a flat tire on the jeep which is why I went to Sam’s anyway! Bleh! Super sucky! I want to know why a Jeep would have a donut spare anyway?! Also, of course, it comes with a super shitty bottle jack. Ugh! I stripped the lug nuts trying to take them off with the hole on the 4way that seemed like the right size! Happily, the day ended better, with a nice bike ride with mom, frenetic crafts at diabetes camp and an ever exciting Board of Education Meeting in the evening. Whew!

On Tuesday after Diabetes Camp, Marek had a friend come over to spend the night. He has made some friends at camp that he doesn’t get to see too often. This is his third year at this day camp in Topeka. It is pretty amazing! Kids from 4 – 16 attend and participate in various activities. They get a lot of down time which is great because they are able to build some relationships. For Marek, the only kid in the district right now with Diabetes, it is nice to meet some other Diabetics. It is also nice for him to meet kids from a different area, more cultural diversity, and just different people – widening his world. Anyway, I had to go pick them up after camp and drove past this scene…
