It’s a great day to serve…

The Immanuel Lutheran Church youth – both the junior high and high school youth – did a service project today and it was fun!!  We visited the Family Promise Day Center in Lawrence.  Family Promise is a small, grassroots program that serves families who are homeless.  The families live in 13 different churches, staying at each one in rotation from Sunday evening to the next Sunday morning.  They are at the churches from 5:30pm until 6:30am each night.  At the churches, congregation members provide dinner and a grab and go breakfast as well as sleeping rooms for each family.  There are currently 4 families and 15 people in the program.  The goal is that during the time they are in the program, they have as few expenses as possible.  No food costs, no personal care items and no rent, utilities etc.  They are free to save their money and received support and job training if they need it.  The kids all go to their usual schools.  Today we did yard work and cleaned the house.  It is easily a 100 year old, or older home on Tennessee Street in Lawrence.  The director is awesome with energy and drive to commit to the people served.  Our youth did a great job and made a visible difference during the time we were there.  It felt great to help and it was fun to work with such a great group of people!!  I am glad that our kids had the chance to see another side of life and to be useful.  Bible application?  Matthew Chapter 25 vs 40 “The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brother and sisters of mine, you did for me.”  (really read from verse 31-46)  Also, from Micah 6:8, “And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
