The luxury of rest.

At our house, rest is indeed a luxury.  We generally fill the days and nights of our lives with activity.  The reality is that our moments of rest are usually fairly short, or filled with sleep! This is not a bad thing really. It causes us to practice quality time management, or at least make the attempt! After all, life on earth is short so enjoying life and filling it with family, friends and fun is important. Choosing what to fill our lives with is challenging. I believe that we are here to do… to do good, to serve, to live, to be a blessing to others if possible.  So many moments to fill!

We each have our little ways of finding moments of peace and rest.  Sometimes it is the brain dead rest of watching Sponge Bob, other times it is reading a book or watching a movie.  Sometimes it is a walk with the dogs or a chat with a friend.  Just this morning after dropping Marek off for Jazz Band at 7am, I took the scenic drive to work to enjoy the views of rural Kansas.  I sipped my coffee, listened to the bible on my phone and snapped some photos that do not begin to capture the glory of a frosty Kansas sunrise.  Nice!

What is important/challenging is knowing how to recognize which moment is which and then choosing how to fill them.  This afternoon Marek felt sick and bleh at school.  This was somewhat predictable as he has been fighting a cold for the last week or so.  Usually, since he is a big kid now, if he is sick I pick him up and leave him home alone for the day.  However, he has had a few rough spots lately so… I took this moment, this day to pick him up and stay home with him.  I made him some chicken noodle soup (homemade and frozen for just such an occasion) and tucked him into a comfy blanket.  We are watching movies and lounging. Cuddling with our dogs.   It is good to be relaxed and kick back  sometimes!  He was in need of an extra dose of love and caring today.

Marcus will be home soon to kick back with us.  I had started a pork tenderloin in the crockpot for dinner after basketball so dinner is easy tonight.  I am going to be able to head to the last Yoga class tonight since I have no other obligations and since Marcus can administer an extra dose of love while I’m gone.  Yay!  An unexpected relaxing luxury!

Where do you find relaxation?  Do you recognize it as a luxury?  Take some time and find an awesome way to fill your moments with something that is relaxing or fulfilling to you.  Many different things can be relaxing.  What does it mean to be relaxed?  To me it means being filled with peace and contentment with the moment and your life.  I wish this for all people, a way to find comfort and peace with who you are, where you are and who you are with in your life at each moment.  While it is easy to say this, it is hard to be thankful for each small positive.  The lens we look through each day will color our days with a peaceful heart or with displeasure and constant wishing for something else.  Take joy and hold on to each moment for what it is.  Some are more relaxing than others – all of them are true and many are wonderful!
