I have a great story to share thus evening. Yesterday I received a mass email. It was addressed to all the parents of youth who had attended A1C Camp. (a summer day camp for youth with Type One all ages). The email was a plea for "support". In order to cut to the chase, here is the body of the email.
Hello,
My daughter went to A1C camp with all of your kids. My husband and I (and daughter of course) really are in some need of some extra support. We are exp. alot of anger, sadness, anxiety, etc . One suggestion the psychologist made is to have someone she can talk to that is going through the same thing. If anyone is interested and joining us sometime at our home or somewhere neutral we would love it. If there is a support group that you know of for type 1 kids and families in the area, please let me know.
Well, of course my response was, yes! Whatever! That was the response of ALL the parents. Several took the lead and after a flurry of emails, poof! We have a free location and a time for THIS Saturday. People are amazing! There is now an A1C Facebook group, a meeting time and intentions to follow up with additional meetings, gatherings, activities.
My observations about this are first focused on the willingness of this mom to ask for help. Asking for help from anyone is tough but from virtual strangers that's BRAVE! I'm eager to re-meet this mom to get to know her more. What a self advocate and an advocate for her child!
Secondly, the response was overwhelming from these parents. Granted we have "met" vaguely, while picking up, dropping off or picnicking at camp but really we don't know each other much at all. Some folks who have been to the camp repeatedly or whose kids go to the same school might be lucky enough to know each other more but really we aren't an existing, close group.
We are all willing to help and be helped! Generosity of spirit fueled by a common need and experience. The emails full of ideas and suggestions were amazing.
Our whole family is excited! We will go as a family and help and be helped. Willing to do what it takes to survive with this thing, Diabetes. Looking forward to this being helpful. Hoping to learn and grow!
