Diabetes Support Group

Well, we had our first A1C Club meeting last Saturday. It was completely uneventful yet completely awesome. What strange power in sharing similarities with others. The family who originally emailed for help got some comfort I think. A group of supportive people, encouragement and commiseration can help almost anyone. Especially when combined with doctors, nurses, prayer and therapists!

There were ten or eleven families present and lots of kids. My kid was happy to see and hang out with other kids with diabetes especially three other guys close to his age. The guys were so "cool". Three of them ended up spending the night together and hanging out. They said they felt like they had "a club". High praise from boys aged 11-14! It's interesting to be the only kid in your school with type one. People make many assumptions about what you need or don't need. Being with others who have similar needs and no assumptions is a relief. As they had snacks and drinks, everyone checked their blood glucose and everyone bolused and everyone had a diet pop. Doing the same thing that "everyone" does while eating or drinking is rare for these kids.

One of the things that bugs me is that people poo poo diabetes as a big deal. They assume they can just take a pill or exercise or that it's easy to get things under control. Not so much!

It is good to share and to meet people who live with similar challenges. Challenges are made less when they are shared. Aristotle said:
Without friends, no one would want to live, even if he had all other goods. Strange, but true! I hope you have a support group of sorts for you and yours. If you don't, you should cultivate one!
