Marek

I am very proud of Marek – today and every day.  There are a million reasons why, but today I am proud of his poise, confidence, grace and ability to be articulate in a group.  Marek did great!  Our family is organizing an event to support Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)  their mission is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Until a cure is found, JDRF is also committed to working tirelessly to develop new and better treatments to improve the lives of people who have type 1 diabetes and keep them as healthy as possible. We are doing this because in 2007, Marek was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  Diabetes is a bad thing.  But, the good news, is Marek is an awesome kid!

This really isn’t about the whole shebang of parenting someone with diabetes.  In fact it’s not really about that at all.  instead it is about Marek the person, the “normal” kid that he spoke of himself as today,  giving an absolutely excellent speech today.  He made a presentation to the Rotary Club today.  He explained a “normal” day in the life of a kid with Diabetes as well as asking for their support for the fundraiser.  He stood up and was so smooth and confident.  He was able to answer questions and change his speech on the fly.  He added great information and personal feelings.  He made the audience laugh.  He was gracious and kind and generous with his thoughts and ideas.  He said that he thought he was blessed to be diagnosed with diabetes because to have diabetes without diagnosis would be horrible. (not to mention deadly but the point is he said he thought he was blessed)

He liked the people at Rotary, most of whom were older than me.  He was polite and funny and himself.  He thanked them and chatted.  Amazing!  They voted to donate $100 to our cause!  DSC_0072

Marek is a great kid and I enjoy him daily!  Today I was proud of him!
