Why we exercise - really!

Just to help out some friends who are struggling with motivation, I thought I'd share the top reasons we (women) really exercise in no actual order. In fact, it's important that you choose the right reason for the right moment!

1. Avoidance and procrastination - Avoid or procrastinate house cleaning, chores, loathsome duties, children, your spouse - anything! Exercise is the best way to get away! After all, your loved ones want you to be healthy, how can they object? Ditch 'em and go outside - alone! The longer you walk the more peaceful you feel!

2. Being outside! Sometimes you have to use some equipment inside, which means usig a different motivator, but if possible GO OUTSIDE! It's also best to go someplace with stuff you like to look at - the wilderness is good for me. Shiny bright sun, interesting grey skies, green stuff, flowers, birds, water - these are a few of my favorite things! Exercise outside puts me there!

3. Peace and contemplation - all this outside alone time in beautiful places allows plenty of time for contemplation! You can contemplate creation - what better proof of God's love than a quick perusal of nature?! You can contemplate lots of other stuff too: self, family, chaos theory - you see my point.

4. Emotional health and good boundaries - it's good to take self time. It's best to do this often but it's hard with family, personal and professional committment. Bail out for a break! Take the pet and the iPod and jam out in nature. When I take a break at home, I could be interrupted. If I fill my schedule too full I am in danger of an exploding head. Scheduling self time leaves some things undone but feels productive on numerous levels and your head won't explode!

5. Socializing - exercise in a group or with a friend! You can talk and walk with a friend and not be interrupted! Seriously! You can also feel productive while hangin' with your peeps! Great one on one discussions in private and with great concentration on your time together! Group exercise classes can be fun. You meet new people, learn new exercises and generally get a good workout. It's a good opportunity to have fun with a group of women! I personally enjoy some level of class clown fun!

6. Developing a sense of your own power - perhaps delusional but... I can kick your ass! Ok, maybe not, but I feel like I could and that's worth something! I feel strong and capable and I LIKE feeling that way! Seriously!

7. I want to be independent when I'm old! This one is pretty serious but it's SO true! Strength training and cardio exercise decrease our risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, spinal stenosis, arthritis and infirmity in old age. I'll be kicking ass into my 80's! Maybe my 90's! This one works for me when I'm feeling sluggish.

8. Looking good! Well, it's true! Exercise helps us stay slim, trim and firm! Jiggly triceps and flubby butts aren't a goal anybody holds close. It's good to have a good body image and to be happy with who you are - everyone is different. However, fitness and the ability to walk without panting is always more attractive than not! I don't want my arm flubby blowing in the wind when I signal a left turn on my motorcycle - ugh!

9. Energy! Exercise makes me feel great! Even when I'm tired or a little droopy, exercise of some type helps me feel better. It's some crazy circle thing - the more you do it the better you feel. Cool!

10. My kid. He's good motivation - not just because he creates a need for alone time! I want to be able to do things with him! He told me he wanted to climb a mountain with me. He told me this when he was around 5 or 6. I'm not missing this! We will hike, wog, bike and climb together it'll be great. I know he will surpass me no matter what but I want to be beside him on adventures as long as possible!

11. Sleep! Exercise make me tired - not just my brain but my body. I sleep great! This is part of the energy circle thing, I guess! Exercise -> Energy -> Sleep -> Energy!

So... Choose one of these and use it today! Choose a different one the next time! It's true, sometimes my motivation is fitting into my jeans or a strappy tank but usually the real reason is one of the other ones. Just for the record, I have some belief that guys use these same motivators! I enjoy feeling good and tired! Good Night!!
