The adventure began Friday night when we kicked off the trip by driving to Oklahoma City. It was just a good way to get a jump start on our trip. It also gave us the chance to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Memorial Website Marcus and I visited Oklahoma City in October 1995 only a few months after the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building which was in April 1995. That visit was marked by devastation and visible destruction. Although much had been cleaned up, there was no rebuilding and the fence full of memorabilia was heart rending. Now, it is still heart rending. 167 people died that day, many of them children. The memorial makes the point that it was a normal day at 9:01am, the bomb exploded at 9:02am and by 9:03am the entire world had changed. We enjoyed the presentation by the National Park Ranger who detailed the symbolism of the memorial. It was well worth the time to visit and view.
From there, we drove on to Amarillo, Texas where we made a stop at the famous Cadillac Ranch . Created in 1974 by three guys who were part of the art group Ant Farm here is an interesting "unofficial website" about the cars. The thing is, it is really interesting. What a phenomenon. So, it’s a sculpture and it’s free and it’s a commentary on Cadillacs and society. It is apparently ok that anyone goes out to look at them and in fact, most people spray paint on them. Each day, each hour they are changed and very obviously enjoyed and entertaining to a wide array of people. It’s odd but cool.we had a good discussion about it and all the observations we made about the sculpture and the people.
Crazy. From our brief stop at Cadillac Ranch aka the cars in the dirt… we kept going to Albuquerque New Mexico. By the way, we began our trip with no technology – no phones and no video games. Crazy notion. Marek played DJ for us and we found many things to discuss. Good first leg of this adventure! Stay tuned for the next leg!
