SO… We went camping Friday in our new bargain pop up camper. We were so excited to find this pop up for $500 this spring with a working air conditioner! Although it is a bit rough, we cleaned it out and decided it would be comfy. We had only set it up in the front yard before this weekend but everything worked great. ![]()
Due to the fact that it was Memorial Day Weekend, the local lakes were pretty busy. We had baseball Thursday night so the earliest we could head out was Friday afternoon. We set out for Milford Lake, about two hours from us. Marek and his buddy Jake were set with bikes, ball gloves and video games. Marcus and I had the motorcycles all packed up and ready to go.
We arrived at Milford and set up camp. It was at this point that we noticed a new hole in the canvas chewed by a mouse! Ugh! Had to bleach wipe everything again and now we need another patch for the roof. Soo.. we continue to set up and crank the roof up at which time we hear a clunk and one side of the roof falls back down! We climbed in and tried to lift it up but it wouldn’t catch. We almost gave up on camping but happily the camp host had some 2x6 boards and a saw so he cut them for us and wahlah a seriously rigged up camper!
Yay! Oh, but wait! It was very apparent that with the one side down and the other side up… that the up side wasn’t coming back down. uhn. So we could only camp not take it back down. yeh. Happily, we are in the age of smart phones and in fact I even had a signal at Milford. I found a few RV dealers around the area and began calling at 5:40pm on a Friday evening. Hah! The first one was closed with no numbers the second place told us that it was ruined and not repairable so we should just push it off a cliff. Ugh! The third place told us that the second place was full of crap! Thank God! This guy was super nice and helpful. He gave us some tips to try to get the roof down and his home number to call when we were heading back with the camper. So we relaxed and camped a bit… moments of bliss…
The guys slept late while I drank coffee, read my book and loved the dogs!
The only flaw was the inevitable trauma of trying to take the camper down… yikes. Conveniently, some friends came up and while they were visiting we voted to take it down with the benefit of 4 adults. Yikes, broke camp and worked to get it down. Couldn’t get it to crank down. So we had to take down the canvas and strap it down for the drive. We drove away from Milford about 9:30pm and at 45 to 55 miles an hour made it to Manhattan by 10:30. I drove with my flashers on the whole way with Marcus following in the truck with the squirrelly 13 year old boys keeping him entertained. Happily, I was alone with good music! We finally fed the boys dinner in Wamego around midnight and made it home at around 1:30 and got to bed by 2am! Whew! It was a “fun” adventure and I’m sure we will remember it forever. The nice guy hopes to have time to get it fixed sometime before the 4th of July!
Officially number #86! Hope your weekend was full of amazing adventurous action! Making memories every day, that’s us!
