In other news, I have been pondering the details of self perception. How do you define yourself?Does it incorporate all of the different things that you value? Do all the different aspects of your life come together to form one cohesive persona? Is one more important than the other? Does it depend on where you are or who you're with? I ponder this because it seems to change with time and interest. There was a time when my identity was very focused on my profession, then a time where it focused on my mothering role. There have always been different elements of my self identity but the emphasis seems to shift. As I grow older I think I am becoming more integrated. I think. I have many interests and loves and characteristics and they all seem to be blending into a more balanced self... usually. Self perception totally colors attitude. I guess I have been pondering this as I work with students who have a negative self concept or self perception. It's hard to explain to students that their self concept and their behaviors and sometimes their moods are all interconnected. If who you want to be isn't reflected in your actions and words then maybe you aren't living up to your own expectations.
